Do you need a LiDAR iPhone to measure rooms?
LiDAR buys you speed, not accuracy. Without it you can still measure every room you will ever quote — it just takes longer, and every number is one you took.
Which iPhones have it
The depth sensor arrived on the iPhone 12 Pro and has been on the Pro and Pro Max models since, along with the iPad Pro from 2020. Standard and Plus iPhones do not have it.
Check before buying a phone for this: the sensor is a Pro-line feature and it has stayed that way across generations, but Apple’s line-up changes and the safest check is the model’s own spec page.

That last row cuts the other way from how people expect. A room walked corner by corner, or tapped onto a grid from tape readings, has no sensor guesswork in it at all — it is slower and, in the sense that matters, more honest.
The two ways without a sensor
Walk it and tap each corner through the camera
Plain ARKit motion tracking, which every modern iPhone has. Point at the foot of each corner, tap, walk to the next. Coming back to the first corner and tapping it again is what tells the app how well the walk went — and that closing gap is where the tolerance on every wall comes from.
Tap the corners onto a grid
No camera at all. Tap the shape of the room onto a grid, then put your tape readings on the walls. This is also the only method that works for a room you cannot get back into — an old drawing, a rental you have seen once, a house that is not built yet.
Both are free in Trueline. Measuring, the drawing and the 3D view are not part of the subscription and never will be.
The honest recommendation
If you are buying a phone specifically for this work, a Pro model saves real time on every job and pays for itself in a season. If you already have a non-Pro iPhone, do not buy a new one for it — the fallbacks are genuinely usable, and on the jobs where a scan goes wrong they are what you would fall back to anyway.
What LiDAR does not buy you
It is worth being precise about this, because the marketing around depth sensors implies otherwise. LiDAR does not make a measurement authoritative. It produces a depth map, and software turns that into planes it has decided are walls — an interpretation that is usually excellent and occasionally confidently wrong.
It also does not help with the two things that most often produce a bad number: a mirror, and a wall you cannot see because there is a bookcase against it. Both are worse with a sensor than without one, because a sensor gives you a clean answer either way.
The buying decision, honestly

A test worth doing before you decide
Take whichever phone you have into a room you know the dimensions of. Measure it both ways — once with the sensor if you have one, once by tapping the corners — and compare both against a tape. You will learn more in fifteen minutes than from any amount of reading, including this page, and you will find out which method you personally are better at.
